Food:

  • Olio app - you can give away your unwanted food to your local community through this app.

  • FareShare South West - they take surplus food from the food industry and those who work with food for their business. They may take it on an individual basis if you contact their Regional Centre, that’s local to you, first. They use this food to then distribute it to charities and those in need.

  • Composting - you can order a compost bin from Bristol City Council (there is a charge) and turn some of your food waste in to compost! Bristol Waste don’t collect compost, so you will have to know what you will be doing with it yourself. It works as a great fertiliser! There are certain foods you can’t use, such as meat and dairy, so it’s important to be aware of that.

  • Food waste bin - you can put all of your food waste in to the food bin which gets taken by Bristol Waste each week. This is a great option since it then goes to GENeco, where the food waste gets turned in to electricity and gas, and stops the methane that would be produced from entering the atmosphere.

  • Re-grow scraps - did you know that some fruits and vegetables can be regrown using scraps? Here is a list and how it can be done.

  • Fermentation from vegetables - you can use up your unwanted vegetables by fermenting them instead of binning them, here is a website which gives you information on how to do it.

  • Food banks - you can donate your food to food banks but they usually only take items with a long shelf life, e.g. tinned foods. Each bank may have different requirements though so it’s good to double check individually what they want/need. If you search up ‘food banks near me’ then you will get a list of the places local to you where you can donate your food.

  • Aidbox Community – a charity helping those who are seeking asylum by offering support and a free shop collated of things people have donated. They accept donations of longer shelf life and packaged foods such as tuna, rice, sugar and so on. Have a look at their requirements and how to donate here.
