Electricals
Firstly, is it broken? You don't need to get rid of it, you can:
Take it to a Repair Café - they can help to mend and repair your broken electrical items for free.
Find a local repair engineer.
If your electrical items are unwanted but working, you can take them to:
Bristol Waste Shops - they can then resell them either on their ebay shop or at their reuse shops.
Digilocal - they take in unused laptops and repurpose them for those facing technological disadvantages. You can donate laptops to them.
Byteback IT - companies only can dispose of IT equipment through this charity, based in the South West, that can also do data destruction.
Share Bristol - an organisation where people can reserve and borrow the things that they need and want, instead of buying them brand new. They take lots of donations, including electrical, check here to see what they need: https://www.sharebristol.org.uk/get-involved/donate/.
Charity shops - they can take some small electrical items such as hair straighteners, may have to ask/check first. This is a good place to check beforehand: https://reuse-network.org.uk/donate-items/#/.
Facebook Marketplace - give away or sell.
Olio app - you can list things to swap and give to other local people in your community.
Aidbox Community – a charity helping those who are seeking asylum by offering support and a free shop collated of things people have donated. They can take small electrical items e.g. toasters. Check here to see what they need: https://www.aidboxcommunity.co.uk/donate-your-items
White goods e.g. fridge, washing machine; places like Emmaus Bristol and SOFA Project take white goods.
If they can't be reused:
Retailer Take Back Scheme - shops will recycle the electrical item you're replacing. Find out which retailers are involved here: https://www.recycleyourelectricals.org.uk/.../retailer.../.
Put them out with your bins - put small electrical items in an untied carrier bag and put it in your black recycling box. Items include: toasters, mobile phones, e-cigarettes and remote controls along with batteries. More on that here.
Somewhere worth looking at:
Recycle Your Electricals - a UK-wide campaign focused on making it easier for people to recycle and reuse unwanted electricals. They have lots of resources and guidance for electrical waste. Here is a link: https://www.recycleyourelectricals.org.uk/.
